Wildlife After the Woolsey Fire: Research Images on Display
Final day of Wildlife Photography Exhibit.
(August 1-October 27, Wednesday - Sunday 9AM-4PM.)
The Woolsey Fire in 2018 remains the largest wildfire in history of the Santa Monica Mountains by acreage. The National Park Service, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, partner agencies, and NPS volunteers collaborate to study and investigate the fire's impacts and long-lasting effects on the ecosystem and its inhabitants. With the use of wildlife camera traps, biologists gain a better sense of what lives, breathes, and zooms through the Santa Monica Mountains and nearby mountain ranges. Visit the King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center during operating hours in August, September, and October to see highlight wildlife research images from the Woolsey Fire Recovery camera project on display. Take a look at research data including images of wildlife behavior rarely seen in-person, photos of collared animals, and site comparisons over the years.

Spongy Moth - online informational public meeting
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner have detected the spongy moth in Monte Nido. This invasive species attacks a wide range of trees, including oaks, hardwoods, evergreens, cottonwoods, willow, and others. When trees are repeatedly defoliated, they become more susceptible to other invasive species and disease, increasing potential for tree death, fire, and erosion.
Two webinar meetings (12pm & 6pm) have been scheduled for our area on Tuesday, Sept. 17th to address the spongy moth survey activities planned for our neighborhood this fall.

Wildfire Resilience: The Botany of Fire
As part of Theodore Payne Foundation’s Wildfire Resilience Resource Day programming, join this free, informative class and demonstration to learn about the Botany of Fire: How California native plants have evolved in close relationship to fire. Reserve your spot.
Native plant species are able to come back following a fire, including shrubs and trees known as crown resprouters. Seeds of many native plant species are fire-responsive, meaning that they only "wake up" and sprout after a burn. In fact, some of our most spectacular wild flowers are endemic fire followers, which means that they only occur in the post-fire landscape, waiting quietly as seeds in the soil for years to reappear in massive numbers after a burn!
